A Gift For You - My FREE Online Art Journaling Workshop!!

Monday, October 24, 2011
Last year, I was one of 21 teachers who taught online art journaling workshops in Connie Hozvicka's 21 Secrets. I'm sharing that workshop with you now below (for free)! The instructional video will lead you through a complete start to finish project where you'll create a completely original one of a kind journal.

The second video is a flip through of the journal I created.....I truly hope you'll enjoy creating your own. It's the kind of journal you can use for further "art journaling", as a scrapbook, or as a more "traditional" written journal. It's also a great project to share with the kids in your life. Have fun!

(Oh and there was a PDF to accompany these videos, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to put it here. If you know how, please clue me in! I think you'll be fine without it though - but if you have any questions, I'm here for you.)

You Really Can't Plan This Stuff

Friday, September 9, 2011

You really can't plan this stuff, "intuitive painting", that is.

That's kind of the point. To be in the present moment, unplanned....

but always listening . . . listening to what wants to happen next on the canvas or paper. Letting go . . . summoning creative abandon. Enjoying the process, free from worries about the end result.

It's really cool when I can drop down into that "zone" - which is definitely not all the time for me. I breathe through it, slow WAY down, try not to analyze. (Which doesn't come easy for a girl who's a bit of a science geek. Sigh. But it is happening more often.)

I'm beyond fortunate to be part of an online growing tribe of painters, one founded by Connie Hozvicka. We remind each other how to do this stuff. We remind each other why we do this stuff. This circle of amazing women artists is another thing I couldn't have planned. It spontaneously grew out of our conversations and shared experiences in Connie's classes.

In 20 days, I'll be meeting a dozen of these women in real life. We are gathering to paint, hike and do yoga in the shadow of the Red Rocks of Sedona, Arizona. This creative sisterhood of women is traveling from (literally) around the world! Such is the magic of the internet . . . I can hardly wait!!

Until then, I continue painting everything I can get my hands on . . .

Spreading out my art supplies in my little home studio and my big ole warehouse studio too.

I'll keep "cleaning my brushes and palettes" off on my art journals, prepping backgrounds for writing I'll do some day . . . cause for now, I've got another canvas on the easel.

"Room to Bloom" with Connie Hozvicka!

Thursday, June 2, 2011
Welcome to my blog series "Room to Bloom"! Some amazing women from around the world will be sharing their personal creative spaces with us. No matter if our space is desk in a corner of our kitchen or a spacious loft studio, we all need room to bloom, don't you think? I know you'll find these sanctuaries as inspiring as I do.

Today, I'm sad to say, is the last of the series "Room to Bloom". However, I'm mundo excited to share a special treat! Over the past year, I've had the pleasure of taking online classes and becoming friends with a very special lady. In fact, many of the girls featured in this series have become my cyber-friends through her classes.....we now affectionately call one another sisters of the "Painting Tribe". Welcome Connie Hozvicka of Dirty Footprints Studio!

She has put together an incredible video tour of her studio in Arizona. I think you'll be delighted and surprised by what she finds the most important element of her Room to Bloom . . . check her out - she just radiates joy, creative abandon and love! (Special post too, I must say, as it's Connie's first dreadlock-free post! You saw it here first world!)

Art Journal Love Party & Mega-Giveaways!!

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Welcome to the party!!! My friend, Connie Hozvicka of Dirty Footprints Studio, has organized a party to celebrate love - art journal love!

I'm one of many art journalers participating by sharing our love of art journaling AND donating an artful gift! If you'd like to win one of the 19 gifts given, go here to see the details of how to win. Just be sure to do it by Friday, 10pm MST, Feb 18!

I'm telling you there are some AMAZING prizes. Here's mine - it's a chunky sketchbook by Sabrina Ward Harrison for Papaya. It's thick and it's pages are card stock, which means it'll even take paint! Perfect for art journaling!

Before you go, take a look at the art journaling I've done over the past few days. It's done on a ready made book with canvas covers and thick papers with a linen finish. (I'm sorry I can't tell you the maker . . . I'd long ago upcycled the packaging into another project!)

This little book is done "graffiti" style and is filled with my love of sketching women and simple objects . . .

I began by simply swiping on acrylic paints for a colorful background.

Then I "sketched" girlies and such with Sharpie Poster Paint pens.

Spatters of paint flicked off the end of my paint brush and messy marks (sharpie poster pens, more acrylic paint & copic markers) added to the graffiti look.

What graffiti doesn't have a little spray paint - that's made easy with the use of some stencils.

Now .... don't you forget to go here for the details to win by Friday, 10pm MST, Feb 18. Comments left here (although I cherish them and encourage you to do so, won't get you into the drawing). Hope I'll soon be sending you a little present....go out and share the LOVE!

The Doodlicious Daybook

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

The past few months, I've had the honor to teach my first online art journaling course over at 21 Secrets: An Art Journal Playground. It was hosted by Connie over at Dirty Footprints Studio. She gathered so many amazing art journaling teachers that the response was stupendous . . . I've had over 180 students pass through my class so far!

My workshop was called the Doolicious Daybook. (Pics here are some of my pages and the cover.) Students began by hand painting doodles WAY big on large rolls of paper. Then they deconstructed, cut, collaged, added any other papers wanted, sewed, taped and otherwise artfully assembled the papers into a completely original journal of their own. Then there was adding photos, journaling and whatever they could think of. I loved seeing their work bloom into full living color before my very eyes!

I'm sad that the workshop will be closing at the end of the month, but I wanted to share a couple of girl's work who wrote blog posts of their own. Do go take a looksie and share the love, won't you?

Sharon Pope, of Moxie Blue, shared her work here.

Jeanne McBrayer, of All Things Quilty, shared her work here and here.

Aren't they wonderful ... and doodlicious?!?

"Finding Water"

Wednesday, December 15, 2010
A couple of days ago, the leader of our Fearless Painting Tribe, Connie, challenged us to a little painting dare. She dared us to paint "our year". A self portrait of sorts. A symbolic representation of our year.

"The portrait doesn't even need to resemble you", she said....and mine certainly does not. Here she is. See I'm no raven-haired, skinny, girlie giant. I'm just a little ole Texas gal, transplanted long ago to the left coast. As you can see, I do have a thang for painting ethnic ladies, surrealism and nature. The mix makes my heart skip a beat or two.

Thought I'd share my process with you here....in reverse.

I finished painting "Finding Water" just this afternoon and I've already grown quite attached. (How does one let go and begin to sell their paintings? They are all my little babies - I can't seem to let go. They are so very personal.)

I actually thought I'd finished painting when I got to the stage below. But then Connie and I had a little chat. She wondered aloud if I were truly done. I insisted that yes, indeed I was. She's a simple portrait, I thought.

But that very night my painting visited in my sleep. She had more to say...she'd need shadowy mountains, a lake to stand in, a bit more lipstick and some shiny bubbles. Bubbles you say? Okay.

The rest of the process you can see for yourself. She appeared out of the blue. No planning whatsoever on my part - just an intention set of "capturing my year". I'm still here trying to decipher the message....how she symbolizes my year....I do know it's been a year of discovery and fulfillment and and purpose and belonging. I suppose that is it - my year of "Finding Water".

My Angel Wore Dreadlocks

Tuesday, November 23, 2010
(I think I may have shared this before, but I'm republishing this story and dedicating it to Connie - my other beautiful friend with the gorgeous dreads.)

*****

“Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.”
--unknown

I find it difficult to believe in ghosts, but I do believe in angels.

In 1985, I moved to San Diego. Shortly afterwards, I began dating Rob, a handsome photographer. I enjoyed his company, but it was nothing serious. We went out on a couple of fun dates. I thought he was an interesting, arty type of guy.

One night, he invited me for dinner and a movie. Following dinner, the weather turned cold and Rob asked if we could drop by his home to pick up his jacket. I had not been there before, but felt comfortable enough to agree.

Rob’s car twisted and turned up a hillside road leading through a charming tree-lined neighborhood to his home. Once inside his unusual and eclectic bungalow, he gave me a tour. I was impressed by his sophisticated taste. I enjoyed looking at his black and white photography and stylish European furnishings. Yet I could not shake the feeling that his interiors appeared more like a movie set than a personal home. Scenic photography backdrops framed the setting. Stainless steel lights and professional equipment were used like props—or even sculpture. Picture perfect!

This guy seemed to have potential - handsome, fit, talented and charismatic. Suddenly, he kissed me once and then again. He didn't stop. He wanted more. "Slow down—not so fast," I insisted. I discouraged more advances and reminded him of our movie plans. But he persisted. I grew fearful as he became more agitated and aggressive. What could I have done to make this guy so angry?

I found out quickly that saying “no” to him did not work. Instinct told me to get out of there. But out to where? Where exactly was there? Once outside, where would I go and how?

It was dark, and I was in an unfamiliar neighborhood. When I attempted to leave, Rob tried to block the door with his body. Fortunately, I was faster. I jerked the door open and rushed down steps leading to the street. Unbelievably, a yellow cab was speeding towards me. I hailed the taxi and it screeched to a stop, just like I’d seen in movies.

M i r a c u l o u s!

In an instant, I was seated inside a smokey cab. For once, I didn't mind the smoke. In moments, the cab was flying down Interstate 5. With only $50 in my purse, I nervously watched as dollars clicked by on the mounting meter. I prayed $50 would cover my trip home. Should I ask the driver to let me out early—and where would early be? I was a stranger to San Diego. I leaned back and decided to work out the tab when I arrived home.

The sounds of reggae - and my heart thumping in time with its steel drums - momentarily distracted me from Rob's intentions. Ziggy Marley’s voice came through the car’s tinny speakers as I watched my driver’s dreadlocks swing rhythmically across her beaded seat. Recovering my composure, I quietly spoke, “Ma’am. I think you just rescued me from a very bad situation.”

Her crystal blue eyes glowed against her dark Jamaican skin as she turned to respond. “Yah, mon. Angels are everywhere.”

It was midnight-quiet when we arrived at my place. I gratefully breathed in the calming scent of eucalyptus that grew near my front door. Ah! The lovely scent of home and safety!

Leaning forward to check the meter, I was stunned to read the fare $50-even, leaving no money for a tip. Guiltily, I apologized to my angel. She laughed and said, “Well, my good deed is done.” I thanked her and stepped outside the car. The sounds of reggae still drifting from its windows, I watched her cab fade into the night.

I’ve often wondered if my cab driver’s appearance on that dark, secluded San Diego street was mere coincidence? Perhaps. I don’t think so. I believe it was divine intervention.

I know one thing for certain, my photographer's “too perfect” bungalow was staged for disaster and I got the picture. If intuition is the voice of our guardian angel, thank God I listened to mine. I am forever grateful.

A Happy Place

Monday, July 26, 2010
Lately, I've been in such a silly, sunny happy place. It's showing up on my journal pages. I knocked out this one before 9am.....kinda sappy, huh?

I have mentioned that I only share my pages before I actually journal on them, right? So this sappy page is bound to get a bit grungier! I just can't be that sweet.

Maybe my pages are looking this way because it's summer in the city ...and maybe it's because of the new pool . . . and could be due to Connie's influence AND maybe it's just cause Sabrina Ward Harrison's coming to town for "Trust the Mess"! I hear the workshop is nearly full....better sign up! I'm just saying.....
