It's Tempting to Analyze

Sunday, October 27, 2013

"Intuitive" art journaling is my favorite way to play.

What I mean by that is sitting down to the page with nothing at all in mind.

No thinking, no planning, no sketching beforehand.

Just making one choice - say choosing a paint or marker color.
Or in this case cutting
patterns and shapes from a sheet of wrapping paper.
Then sticking it down.
Then making another choice . . . which leads to the next.

Several choices later - the placement of more collage pieces, a stamped face, some doodles,
tracing my hand (prompted by seeing the shadow of it fall upon the page),
coloring with nearby random markers - and a page is filled.

It's addictive actually.
A journal spread may evolve over the space of a day or a week -
maybe it never gets finished at all......

It's sometimes tempting to analyze or seek meaning in the images that unfold.
And that's okay, but not at all necessary for my enjoyment of the process.

Was this one below too?
Does it matter?

I feel what matters most is the sitting down to it . . .
the claiming of time and space,
the breath . . . the slowing down,
the finding flow, the surrender,
the creating of something from nothing,
and the joy it brings me.

Why not enjoy your own play day . . .
I have a free intuitive art journaling video workshop series here.
And there are a few other freebie tutorials here too.

Journaling like this is the easiest way for me, if I try to hard it just never works.
